These are all-purpose vessels that are most often deployed for offshore oil and gas but are also used in offshore wind. They are mainly used for towage, anchoring and installation operations and supply services, but also as dive support vessels. Anchor handling tugs are often equipped with a dynamic positioning system (DP1 or DP2) that enables them to maintain precise positions in offshore locations over long periods and under a wide range of weather conditions. An anchor handling tug’s powerful winches serve to tow drilling platforms and recover large drilling platform anchors offshore. Moreover, many anchor handling tugs have additional transport capacities on deck and tank containers below deck in order to supply solid and liquid materials to drilling platforms. This type of combined tug is often called an anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel.
