Helicopters today can be specially equipped for transferring personnel and equipment to offshore wind farms (OWFs). A service speed of 250 to 300 km/h and an operating range of 800 km result in particular benefits in respect of time. Moreover, a helicopter is still able and allowed to fly at wind speeds where accessing the turbine from the service vessel is no longer possible. Above all, a helicopter is the fastest and safest means of transport for rescue operations in an OWF. All helicopters must have a permit for offshore flight operations, including two drive units, a radar altimeter, an inflatable life raft and an emergency floating device. In addition, a permit is required to perform flights on the basis of instrument flight rules.
